About Us

The Stanford Historical Society was founded in 1976 to encourage the study and understanding of Stanford University's history and the ideals of the University's founders.

Stanford University, now in its second century, is recognized as one of the world's leading educational institutions, making important contributions to science, medicine, the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, engineering, education, law, and business.

The Stanford Historical Society mission is “to foster and support the documentation, study, publication, and preservation of the history of the Leland Stanford Junior University.” The Society supports itself financially through memberships and gifts, and participates in University efforts to determine and recognize the historical significance of campus places and accomplishments.
